Open Stand Model (OSM) is a tree list modelling platform (Application Programming Interface [API]) for developing regionaly calibrated individual-tree stand development models. This is a collaborative open source project between FORUS Research and a number of public and private organizations in eastern North America.
Two regional variants have been calibrated since 2012, including:
The Acadian Variant (OSM-ACD) was calibrated between about 2012 to 2018 by foresters and researchers at the Forest Planning and Stewardship Branch of the New Brunswick Department of Natural Resources and Energy Development, Northern Hardwood Research Institute, University of Maine, and University of New Brunswick.
The OSM Newfoundland and Labrador Variant (OSM-NL) was calibrated in 2023 & 2024 by FORUS Research with assistance from the Newfoundland and Labrador government. Calibration was based on provincial forest plot data from both Newfoundland and Labrador. This variant is very new and has not been validated or accepted by the Newfoundland and Labrador government for forest management planning or any other use, with the exception of third-party testing. Use of this software in any context, other than for testing, is not recommended at this time. Users should consult with FORUS Research and the Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Fisheries, Farming, and Natural Resources for more information on how to contribute to this project if interested in testing.
In the download, see Help\OSM_Help.html for version history and important changes for this version.
No actual software installation is required at this time. OSM can be run from any folder on your computer; however, it is recommended you place it in a directory with no spaces. Do not run OSM directly from the zip file package; i.e., unzip it first!
By using this software, you agree to the license terms stated Help/OSM.HelpFiles/OSM.License.htm. Variants may have additional terms of use in thier help file documentation, and users must agree to those as well to use those Varaints.

Notepad++ (free and highly recommended)
OSM Command files can be more easily viewed with Notepad++.
Open your OSM command file in Notepad++ and switch the editor language to Python to greatly improve visual display of commands, colored comments, foldable regions, etc. While the OSM command line was designed to look a bit like Python, it is not Python.
